I am delighted to send my heartiest congratulations to Gay Switchboard and wish it well with its renewal. I can hardly believe that it is forty years since Tel-A-Friend was actually founded.I always like tinkering with names for organisations and I am very pleased to say that I invented the name Tel-A-Friend, collapsing in a Joycean way the idea of the telephone and confiding in a friend.
As Chairman of the IGRM I continued to take an active interest in the service and helped to ensure it got training from Samaritans for its recruits. The work of Gay Switchboard is extremely important. There is still a level of fear and shame as well as confusion for young people around the country discovering they may be LGBT. It is a wonderful and humanitarian gesture to lend a comforting ear to those in distress. It is also a great privilege.
I congratulate all those involved.
Senator David Norris.
